Have you experienced this in your organization?
An issue arises with a client or prospect. There are meetings, conversations, emails — and yet … the issue remains.
One respondent in our 2026 Real-Time Business Conversation Index described it this way:
“Issues don’t get resolved effectively. They drag on and client satisfaction suffers, client retention suffers.”
So conversations are happening, but there’s no result. Why? Because no one is taking ownership of the discussion. And without clear ownership, conversations become circular.
People contribute their thoughts and experiences, ideas are openly shared, and everyone is updated regularly. But if no one is clearly responsible for moving the issue to resolution, the problem doesn’t get solved. It gets bigger.
It can be difficult to know when this is happening. For example, everyone can be contributing a lot of energy toward finding a solution, but this energy is scattered rather than focused. And multiple team members might accept responsibility for different aspects of the solution, but their tasks are not clearly defined. And while progress is discussed, it is not driven by specific deadlines and oversight.
Issues linger longer than necessary.
This is when clients lose confidence, and over time, the trust that’s been built can start to erode.
Fortunately, there is a mindset shift that makes a big difference. When resolving an issue for a client or prospect, instead of continually asking team members, “What’s happening?”, keep asking, “Who owns the next step?”
Clarity and resolution don’t come from more discussion. They are reached through clear responsibility.
When ownership is defined, conversations become focused and decisions become easier. There’s a shorter timeline for discovering solutions, happier clients, and less-stressed team members.
Try this this week:
The next time a conversation is underway and progress feels slow, pause and ask: Who owns the next step? Make sure ownership is clear before the conversation continues.
You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the momentum you create and the outcomes produced.
